Contract: 12 month fixed term contract
Location: Hybrid - flexibility to work from home or at any of our main hubs (London, Bristol, Manchester and Harwell)

Jisc is the UK higher, further education and skills sectors’ not-for-profit organisation for digital services and solutions. We believe education and research improves lives, and technology improves education and research.

Our vision is for the UK to be a world leader in technology for education and research and our mission is to power and empower our members with the technology and data they need to succeed. We know that digital technology has the ability to transform the student experience. We have the experience, expertise and know-how to drive that transformation.

About the role:
The technology and data team provides high quality management and support across the Digital Resources Directorate’s products and services. It provides the technical infrastructure to support all we do, bringing expertise of the domain-specific data within our sectors and utilising new technologies and professional standards.

This is a new role that has been created to play a key part in the implementation of data capabilities including: design and implementation of databases, management of cloud-based infrastructure, integrating data from disparate sources, designing schemas to implement data models and contributing to the ongoing evolution of our data offering.

The initial focus of this role will be on data required for two projects operating in the university-sector research publishing and licensing space.

How We Work

The Technology and Data Team works with an agile approach for the delivery, operational support and evalution of the current and future DR technical portfolio. Internally, we do lightweight project management, without aggressive sprint cycles or daily stand-ups. We prioritise sustainable workloads, product quality and staff development. Team members have realistic goals, ownership of project workstreams and accountability for their deliverables.

Responsibilities will include:
• Design, build and maintain databases, schemas, and query indexes
• Select and utilise appropriate cloud solutions for data storage and processing
• Develop new ETL (extract, transform, load) pipelines and write documented and optimised ETL scripts
• Work with enterprise platforms (e.g. Mulesoft) to specify, develop and document APIs to meet business needs. Ensure appropriate security and access controls align with data governance strategy
• Support non-technical stakeholders with data collation tasks by integrating data from a wide range of sources to produce meaningful spreadsheets, reports, visualisations or databases

Key Skills and Experience:
• Demonstrable experience of designing, implementing and administrating relational databases
• Scripting languages such as python and working with APIs; configuration languages such as RAML or YAML
• Strong knowledge of good security and data governance practices
• Ability to work with project teams across multiple parts of an organisation to deliver requirements in a collaborative and timely manner
