Contract: 2.5 year Fixed term contract
Location: Hybrid - office based in London with full flexibility to work from home or at any of our hubs on occasion – London, Bristol, Manchester and Harwell.

The team:
The Janet network division is aligned to the; Design – Build – Operate model for service delivery and support. The network engineer role has responsibility for the delivery, availability, integrity, and management of all network services that are offered via the Janet network.
The Janet NOC is recognised as a centre of excellence for operational and delivery networking, all Janet network engineers are expected to promote this role and to perform their duties in a way that maintains the high profile achieved by Jisc, at all levels

About the role:
The apprentice network engineer role will support our Ops desk along with our NEG and CAT functions. You will be carrying out tasks assigned by the team manager as related to the team’s primary objectives.
You may need to travel and attend site or external locations when required for network related tasks. Produce, develop and maintain operational procedures, work instructions and appropriate documentation.
Collaborate when required with colleagues within the directorate, to provide the necessary technical support. Actively participate in project teams and procurement panels as required to assist in the evaluation and procurement of new networks, services or equipment and their technologies
Other responsibilities will include:
• Record and track queries and complaints and ensure their resolution either by Jisc Service Desk staff or by escalation to other members of the company as appropriate
• Record, track and ensure resolution of operational problems, including those reported to the Jisc Service Desk, those identified by Jisc Service Desk staff and those notified by automatic network monitoring systems. This will include liaison with customers, suppliers, other network operators and colleagues
• Monitor the regional, national and international network systems and services that comprise Janet
• Contribute to the development of processes and procedures as part of the Management Framework as required within the Jisc Service Desk
• Proactively monitor customer networks via our internal monitoring system, investigating, troubleshooting and resolving issues.
• Provide incident management and technical resolution of 1st line network related faults and prompt escalation to 2nd line when required.
• To be studying towards an IT qualification (ideally Cisco/Juniper Technology, e.g. CCNA) if you haven’t got one already
• Operation of network equipment at various locations for which specific health and safety requirements are demanded, which dictates that all engineers are required to undertake the relevant training, and for them to create Methods of Procedure (MoP) and Risk Assessment Method Statements (RAMS), where necessary. [Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided to all field engineers]
